Rees Panel Project

Recognising the Value of Care Experience

The Rees Foundation - Our Vision
For people with care experience to have opportunities to seek the support they need to reflect on their own experience, recognise its value and offer it to others for shared benefit.

Rees Panel Project was launched to promote and facilitate care experienced adults (i.e. care leaver aged 18+) within fostering & adoption panels. Our aim is to provide specifically tailored training and to connect panels with skilled care experienced people.

There are issues in general for recruiting and retaining panel members due to the frequency of panels, the availability of professionals and those with relevant experience to attend. In addition fees vary considerably and often do not reflect the extensive reading required for most panels.

In the recruitment of those with care experience, there are also additional anxieties about exploitation, providing appropriate support and their understanding of the role and function of the fostering panel. However, diversity and differing perspectives within panel are essential to the coherent functioning of a panel and those who are care experienced have a unique and valuable contribution to make.

The training and support we provide aims to equip people with the skills required to take on the role of a panel member, whilst acknowledging the complexities of utilising personal experience in a professional context.

Aims

  • Recruiting care experienced people to become panel members
  • Specific & recognised training
  • Ongoing support – buddy system & network
  • Creating a UK wide database of care experienced panel members
  • Connecting panels with trained care experienced people
  • Providing guidance to panels
  • Developing excellence in practice model & raising standards
